Cassie Coyne, a Norwell High School senior and Bluffton native, recently signed to continue her academic and athletic careers at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio. She will swim for the University and she plans to major in Elementary Education.

Cassie is the daughter of Kerry and Tracy Coyne. Her siblings are Ryan, Kody and Ellie Coyne. She is coached by Stephanie Scott, Justin Grant, Quinn Biberstine and Rich Utterback at Norwell. She will be coached by Tricia Boggs at Shawnee State University. When asked what inspired her to start swimming, she said that it was when her brother started swimming, and her mom gave her the choice of sitting there to watch or to swim along with him.

“I fell in love with the sport,” Cassie said.

Cassie has participated in swim for eight years including the Wells County Otters club swimming. She is a part of the National Honor Society and her favorite class is English. She currently works at Bluffton Elementary School and started there in August 2024. She also works as a lifeguard and swim instructor at the Wells Community Pool in the summers, as she has for the past three years.

One of Cassie’s favorite parts of being on the team is “when we have random dance parties throughout practice to take breaks and just make practice more enjoyable.”

When it comes to professionals that Cassie looks up to, she points to Olympic Gold Medalist Katie Ledecky.

“She’s such a phenomenal distance swimmer and she always has a positive mindset and sets goals to accomplish,” Cassie said. “Her technique is really impressive and I often watch her swim to try and form a better technique when I swim.”

Cassie’s hopes and dreams for college are to “thrive in a new environment” and to make new friends. She wants to learn how to be a teacher and “inspire the kids I will teach and be the best teacher I can be.”

When envisioning a version of herself five years from now, Cassie sees herself graduating from college and teaching in a fourth-grade classroom, “hopefully somewhere in West Virginia.” She also sees herself working towards her Masters degree and getting a license to teach high school.
