Crestview Cheering on the future

CMS hosts "Future Cougars" during girls' basketball game

Close your eyes and picture this: the smell of concessions, the sounds of live music and gym shoes squeaking on the floors. The feeling of the crowd as they pack the gymnasium and roar together to cheer on their team.

That was the experience of entering the Cougar Den on Monday, December 2, for the Crestview Middle School vs East Noble girls’ basketball game, which doubled as Future Cougar Night and Greenbear Digital Media’s Game of the Week this week.

The first game of the night featured the seventh-grade girls. The first quarter looked good for the Cougars, with Crestview earning six points to East Noble’s three. Unfortunately, this lead was short-lived, as East Noble earned nine points to Crestview’s four in the next quarter.

During half-time, the “Future Cougars Night” portion of the evening took place. This was an opportunity for a group of local girls gathered from Flint Springs, Roanoke and Lincoln Elementary Schools to cheer with current Crestview cheerleaders.

According to Crestview cheer coach Jennifer McCoy, the “Future Cougar” cheerleaders were able to take part in a three-hour long cheer clinic with the Crestview cheerleaders to learn a short routine and grow more comfortable with the art of cheering at a different level.

“We want to grow not only the middle school but eventually the high school,” McCoy said. “So if we can get them started early, that’s what we want.”

Kinzlee Branham, a "Future Cougar" from Flint Springs Elementary School, said “I was nervous but excited I got to cheer for a middle school game. My favorite part of cheer is making new friends and cheering on the players. And, I love doing stunts!”

Kinzlee’s mother, Alix Busch, stated “I love seeing [Kinzlee] do the things she loves! She has talked about cheer since she was six so seeing the big smile on her face while she’s out there with the big kids makes me so happy for her! I’m so glad she got this chance.”

After halftime, the Cougars and Knights once again took the floor and the Knights kept their lead up. In quarter three, the Knights earned seven points to Crestview’s five. In the end, the Knights won the seventh-grade game 24-19.

Top scorers for Crestview were:

  • Hadley Toll, with 11 points

  • Rosie Friesen, with four points.

Top scorers for East Noble were:

  • Adley Taylor, with eight points

  • Alexxa Amstutz and Lilly Ruse, each with five points.

Next, the eighth-grade girls battled it out but Crestview ultimately suffered a loss against East Noble during this game, too. The two teams were fairly evenly matched in the first quarter, with Crestview earning three to East Noble’s two.

Crestview earned 10 points in quarter two against East Noble’s eight, but East Noble turned the tide in the last half. Quarter three saw the Knights earn eight points versus just two points for Crestview, and while the Cougars were nearly able to tie things back up in the last seconds of the game, the Knights ultimately won 26-25.

Top scorers for Crestview during this game were:

  • Ruby Grogg with 17 points

  • Tayteum McCoart with three points.

Top scorers for East Noble during this game were:

  • Sydnee Hillier with 11 points

  • Bella Lemmon with five points.
