It was a packed house at Norwell High School on Friday, December 13th, as the Norwell Knights faced the Columbia City Eagles in an attempt to defend “The Castle” during this conference game. It was a nail-biter until the very end, and the Eagles were able to defeat their hosts with a 74-67 win in the end.

With the Knights and the Eagles being so close in their rankings, this game was projected to be an exciting night for players and fans alike. According to johnharrell.net, the Norwell girls’ team is ranked fifth in 3A for Indiana and Columbia City is ranked third in 3A for Indiana. The site stated that the two teams last met on December 8, 2023, with Norwell just barely scraping out a win with a score of 45-44.

In the first quarter of the game, Norwell was up 23-19 and they kept their lead through the second quarter, fighting hard to end the half 35-33. Columbia City came out of halftime playing hard and took the lead during quarter three. With 4:19 left in the third, the Eagles were up 46-41 and they only took the lead further from there. With a mere 39 seconds left in the third quarter, Columbia City truly hit their stride to take the score 63-47. While Norwell was able to slightly shrink the 16-point deficit, the team was never able to overcome it during the fourth quarter.

Coaches for the game were Amy Shearer (Columbia City) with a 205-139 record in 15 years of coaching and Eric Thornton (Norwell) with a 459-195 record in 28 years of coaching.*

Next up for Norwell is a trip to Woodlan Junior-Senior High School on the 17th, followed by a home game against DeKalb High School on the 21st. The Eagles will be hosting Warsaw High School on the 17th and will take a trip to East Noble High School on the 21st.
